The Myth of The Underdog
Read the rest at The Nib HERE
I think about this often, we all imagine that if we lived back in olden times, we’d somehow have that moral foresight to see the injustices of the day and stand on the right side of history. But, the truth is that most of us would do no such thing.
We really do love the underdog story, but it’s hard for us to transfer that love onto the existing underdogs of today. We want to excuse their circumstances, find ways to blame them for their own misfortune. We don’t like the underdogs who’re unable to overcome their circumstances, even though that would clearly be the majority of them, because their existence undermines one of our other great American myths: that of the Self-Made Man.
